Basilica di San Lorenzo Maggiore is a church in Naples that is located at the historic center of the ancient city. Founded around the time of St Francis of Assisi, and harboring a unique history spanning centuries, San Lorenzo is both church and monastery plus museum, and from its Gothic architecture to an excavated Roman market the sites to be seen are numerous.

Amazing! The excavation is in the middle of the city under the existing church was a temple.

Beautiful basilica with a wide array of impressive works of art from early Renaissance works from the School of Giotto through Ferdinando Sanfelice's late 18th-century Baroque facade.

I would highly recommend everyone to do a tour here, was one of the best guided visits I have experienced (our tour was in Italian, don't know about English, availability and quality-wise). The archaeological site is fascinating and very well preserved, the different strata of Greek/Roman/medieval city building are very visible. The part of the Roman forum is really illustrative of the period, and the arched Greek cistern is especially worth seeing, as such structures are very rare. The church complex is also worth a visit, especially with the information from the tour. Highly recommended!
